‘Willing’ ethnic-nationalists, diffusion, and resentment in India: A micro-foundational account

Abstract Using evidence regarding the consolidation of Hindu nationalism in India we put forward new ethnographic data about variety popular support for a Hindutva project and framework that proposes an interactive theory social identity. This helps us understand how becomes embedded society. We assert could be fruitfully analysed by focusing on processes through which ideas exclusive spread among ordinary middle-class people are expressed micro-level psychological changes at individual level. The is being authored not only parties or state, but also societal actors, specifically, Indians. has been spreading micro-public spheres time apparent peace between elections, with participation willing supporters. Building our fieldwork research psychology history, conversations have helped to identify profiles different types nationalists, categorize as ethnic-nationalists, hardliners, bystanders, moderates. Further, suggest need focus inter-linked mechanisms such diffusion emulation Hindu-centric beliefs ideas, mobilization hardliners organizations, impunity resulting from protection state agencies, create ethnic-nationalists sustains nationalism. Evidence interactions survey organizations concurs findings material allows delve deeper into varieties nationalist across diverse people.
